With every breath I appreciate it ever more. Especially now as morning breaks I awake to the sound of a birds song, as I turn, the air fresh against my cold pillow from an open window. I love how every morning I open my door to the awe-inspiring views of the nearby fells and heart pounding, the smell of the green. Every morning, no matter if rain or cloud, I feel exactly the same. Every morning I take the same deep breath as though experiencing for the first time the golden sun kissing the fells. I leave, taking time to appreciate dreams of my childhood; yearning to live in the heart of the Lake District.

I was invited by Arseny Vesnin founder of DesignCollector to submit a piece of artwork to celebrate their 6th year.

On April 13 Designcollector Network celebrates Six years! Privately selected creators will do their artworks for Designcollector's six anniversary.

Below is my entry, simply playing on their own tag line 'all you need are links' which I feel 'links' in quite well with the shape of the 6.

Grasmere

On the 12th February, 2009 I moved into my new flat in Grasmere. I am living right in the centre of the village above the local Post Office, the views are gorgeous and I cannot wait to go out walking and not to forget taking lots of photographs.

At the moment I have no internet connection so my blog and various other networks haven't been and won't be updated as frequently as I would like. Hopefully in the next three weeks I should be getting a phone line installed and I'll be away again.

Thank you for all baring with me. I can promise you will be seeing more here very soon, not to mention my websites re-launch and the possibility of some free goodies!

DesignNotes was launched in Canada in 2005 and is now published in New York by designer, writer and educator Michael Surtees. Michael tries to see life filtered through design, as opposed to placing design on a pedestal. Every once in a while, food and music slip on into the discussion. When not writing about design, Michael is the Design Director of Daylife.

NEW BLOG

Unfortunately, for some time I have had no internet connection in my flat, I am hoping to get it sorted within the next few weeks.

I am still between two blogs at the moment having found limitations with the www.sarahfrance.com/blog wordpress template, I have decided I am going to keep posting here and hopefully keep the updates flowing.

My website is currently having data inputted and should be back up and running very soon. My good friend Andi has been applying a new template by which I am just thrilled!

Currently, I am working on:

01. My new logo and how it may animate on my websites intro page
02. Also an identity re-vamp for this blog
03. Inputting data into my new gridified website
04. Completing stationary for my sisters wedding invites
05. Creating two more titles for Fault Magazine
06. Expanding on my photographic knowledge

Amelia’s Magazine is a beautiful biannual creation that aims to bring together – in good old-fashioned print – the very best in new music, fashion, art, illustration and photography. Renowned for its very special covers (previous issues have been encrusted with Swarovski crystals, lazer-cut, made out of furry flock, scratch ‘n’ sniff in different flavours and glow-in-the-dark) it is lovingly edited, designed and crafted by Amelia (and her work experience) in her spare room just off Brick Lane in East London.

Calling all interns!

Amelia's Magazine is looking for four new interns to run the music, fashion, art and earth sections of Amelia's Blog. You will need to be a capable and fast writer, able to edit and co-ordinate other contributors, interested in the role of the arts in inspiring discussions and action over Climate Change, and most of all bursting with enthusiasm for your topic.

If you own a mac laptop, are self-motivated and have a passionate interest in any or even better all of the above topics then please drop me an email at info@ameliasmagazine.com with the heading I WANT TO BE AN INTERN by Friday 13th February with:

I am currently designing a logotype for a local creative card maker, Andria Simpson. The idea of the logo is to appear friendly and have a hand-rendered quality. Here is a sneaky preview of my new project, the next step is to render the logo with Quink Ink. To myself, nothing beats the tactile quality of hand made!

My Ampersand mug design has been photographed using some propping and all together I am really pleased with the outcome. I may even sell these designs at a later date.

Well, I have a fond love of Ampersands as most of my readers will know. So I decided to create myself a mug with an Ampersand with the typeface revealed on the reverse. I am aiming to do a series covering the Adobe fonts.

This is a sneaky preview of the design. Hopefully tomorrow, when it is much brighter (here is hoping!) I have set up some natural elements to photograph the final product shot; I will upload the new images to this post when complete.

Looking for the right type

My sister is getting married in September and I have the pleasure of designing her wedding invites/favours and general visual goodies.

So today we have decided on a font by which I am going to create a logotype to apply on the various designs; this will be used as a stamp and will be placed on almost everything.

With the wedding being in Cyprus we want the type to be a little bit tropical looking yet still quite traditional looking. The first typeface which caught our eye was the amazing Burgues Script from Veer.

Although traditional, the letter forms and stunning glyphs were something we would not consider to be tropical. So not looking too far away we came across another stunning typeface on Veer called Affair, which I must admit I have came across time and time again. The typeface is so beautiful and has a tropical decorative feel.

So with the font chosen, I am now going to create a logotype with first names: including the date of marriage and location.

Pentagram's 2008 calendar features typefaces designed by Matthew Carter.

Kit Hinrichs has designed Pentagram’s 2008 Classic Typographic Calendar using twelve typefaces designed by typographer Matthew Carter including Walker (originally designed in 1995 for the Walker Art Center), Snell Roundhand (a 1966 revival of 17th century English writing master Charles Snell) and Galliard (a 1978 anthology of Roman and Italian styles of French punch-cutter Robert Granjon). “I wanted to bring a new awareness of typographic design through this calendar,” said Hinrichs. “Typefaces are pervasive in our daily lives in everything we read and see around us and yet most people are oblivious of them or the circumstances in which they were created. We can gain a new perspective on our world by studying the origin of typefaces. Type Trumps

Creative Review:

Rick Banks, has created a set of Top Trumps style cards where classic typefaces are the subject matter - hence the name, Type Trumps. Each card is designed to make the most of the particular font it features, and typophiles will happily find such faces as Frankfurter, Times, Helvetica, Johnston Underground and Neu Alphabet in the pack. I have to say I do love a good grid system, it's amazing what can be achieved with a few well structured lines! Well Antonio Carusone at AisleOne.net has used his initiative to fill a huge gap in the website and blogging experience for us Graphic Designers; supplying us design addicts with some useful and well structured information!

Hey folks!

I wanted to let you know about a new site I’ve just launched called The Grid System. It’s basically an ever-growing resource site on the topic of grid systems and anything associated to it, like the golden ratio and baseline grids. My goal for the site is to be a one stop shop for all designers to learn about grid systems, how to design them and how to use them.

The site features links to articles, tools, books as well as templates and other goodies. I’ve also added the ability to show the grid that the site was built on, this way visitors can learn about the structure and how it was applied to the design.

I’ve also partnered up with YouWorkForThem to bring a great collection of books to the site. Over time the site will grow in content (I have a backlog of articles and tools to post) as well as features. I plan to add a forum where people can chat about grid systems and design in general, and other small things like wallpapers. Additionally, I’ve created a Flickr group as an extension of the site.

White Lies was made from flour and dough.

The idea was to keep the surrounding space as white as possibly to allow easy application. I am going to re shoot the two entries, this and The Redwalls and see how they appear as titles with white space.

It is true about designers being their own worst client - i am considering actually just going for 'The Logo' and adapt it when i come across a new font or concept.

Brief Bio:
Born 1956 and now living in Dumfriesshire in Scotland, Goldsworthy works directly with nature, using a variety of materials including twigs, leaves, stones and even snow. The British sculptor uses photography and video to capture his transient works presenting the process of time documented through his wonderful creations. He uses natures tools, colouring the landscape with intriguing displays, some of which can only be appreciated through his own documentation.

Since my time studying at Sixth Form, I have followed Goldworthy's work and even to this present day i am still as exhilarated by his work as i was back then. Having visited Grizedale Forest Park and been in contact with 'The wall that went for a walk,' it was breath-taking to be stood in front of an extraordinary piece of transient art.

Where ever possible i try to introduce this idea of collaborating with nature, as you have maybe noticed from my Kern and Ampersand pieces.

The corruption process start by reading the binary of an image file [JPG or GIF], then some bytes are swaps [the number of replacement is a random value from 1 to 20]. The file is then "saved as" a new document. Depending on the number replacement and of the original compression, the image will have a completely different and unpredictable aesthetics. So from a single image the program can generate millions of corrupted versions. And because it is a real corruption system that damages the binaries of a file, some of the results can’t be showed because they are too damaged...This online version is dedicated to anyone who desire to corrupt JPG files.

Having just got back from vacation, it has been two whole weeks since my last post.

Before i went away i began searching for an enthusiastic guest artist to step in, but the deadline was too optimistic. I have now decided, with my upcoming work load (more to be revealed on the 1st of October), to circulate the idea of having a selection of guest artist. It was surprising to see that a lot of the older smaller EP's do not have much (if any) artwork; most was to promote the record label. I was invited by Alex Ostrowski at YCN to produce 4 trees which were to be embellish on both sides (2 small, 4 medium and 2 large). The World of YCN 'Forest' is to help promote their 08/09 YCN Book.

It is strange how so many actions we make are contagious.

So i thought it would be a great idea to promote happiness in this way - placing a note anywhere and everywhere to remind us of how subtle actions change the moods of others.

We should appreciate the small things in life; like the ability to smile.

Logo *update

A reader suggested creating the logo as a pure bold logo type. Here I re-worked my existing design, even changing some letter forms to make the composition feel more comfortable. I am pleased with the final outcome, as an identity it does stand out - bold is beautiful. The diagonal vectors worked well, but as an identity it appeared a little washed out. It may even be worth trying to combining both styles just to cancel that option out too.

The typeface was based on the font used by 'Self-Service' Mag.

I have been working on my website for a some time, creating the graphics ready to upload. I have been using the database Indexhibit.org as i have read many positive reviews. Indexhibit is a popular database for creatives as it allows so much ease for showcasing works.

I'm finding the functions quite fluid, there are many ways to improve the template and downloaded extras, but as a novice i'll be just pleased to get the website up and live and tweak it at a later date.

I love the format of indexhibit, works pretty much like a blog, you add text and upload images then turn on publish. I have learned a great deal from only playing about with the functions, not only that, the developers, Daniel Eatock & Jeffery Vaska are quick to respond to any queries in the forum. Plus a good friend of mine and co-design enthusiast Andi Farr has been giving me some great help and advice.

I hope to have the website up and running come September, after that i will be tweaking as my confidence grows - just like my blog design.

Rather than having just a static graphic of my canvases, i decided to place them in a scene to display on my website. I feel these photographs will give a sense of realness, rather than a vector like graphic.

Something everyone is talking about, the new Radiohead music video is truly breathtaking. Who thought coding could look so phenomenal.

Inspirational and electrifying, the video uses no cameras and was shot with two technologies; Geometrics Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR, both of which use scanners and lasers to capture and render 3D images.

Fifty Designers' Current Favourite Typefaces

Is a small publication by James West of Create/Reject.

The book is just fascinating, giving an insight into the minds of some of the top names in design. The concept itself is very original yet very personal from the designers perspective: its like a woman asking another woman what perfume she wears, it seems quite a polite question and you should be flattered, but you don't want to answer as they may just go out and buy it for themselves!

James came up with a great solution, just to display the statement adding the designers name in front of "...current favourite typefaces." - changing the font of each word corresponding with the choices - so you would have to do some research if you did not recognise the font.

The book is pocket size and only £3, which is donated to UNICEF.

I am intrigued by modern day Architecture, especially when it comes to complex physical structures such as bridges. Being a Graphic Designer I have come to appreciate not only the anatomy of these completed constructions but the planning, design and the organisation required; which is echoed throughout creativity.

Typographic Docking Station...

I spent a couple of hours today mocking up an idea for a docking station using dimensional typography.

The next step is to ensure theres enough room to incorporate the speakers and the iPod/MP3 itself. Could the player be tucked within one of the letter forms...? Still only a rough concept, but i feel there is so much scope.

Within this design - to correct the design from the product point of view, i could make the 'es' join and lower the 's' giving adequate room for the second speaker.

Post will be updated as the design progresses.

Having done some research on speakers, i came across this design by Nokia for the XpressMusic Phone. I can see that creating the actualt letter forms as the speakers would work - imagine the shape here could be an 'A' or a 'V.'

Very pleased with this find, still researching further and looking at other possibilities with the actual wording:

With such great interest in the T-Shirt designs i created a couple of months ago, i went ahead with a test print to see if the designs would actually be successful. Sending a visual presentation pack including full vector .eps outlines off to print, i did not expect the size of the text on the T-Shirts to be so small, so currently placing a new order.

Whitehaven Snappers Logo

Yesterday there were talks of a logo for the Whitehaven Snappers group. So i spent some time today creating the identity below.

With the group being open to any photographers living in the Copeland area or anyone taking photos of this north-western part of England - i decided the best approach was to incorporate a camera lens isotype into the typography. In the letter form of the S the circle could have a rotation of scenes taken by the snappers, this image could constantly change with each application therefore giving each snapper the chance to be featured within the logo itself.

This is an initial vector, the full name of the group could be placed underneath the logotype initials, possibly in Leiture Display.

Being a huge fan of Apple, i decided to create several screen savers for their famous iPhone Touch. Below are a few examples i have been working on, i adore the use of neon colours within the navigation and found it something worth exploiting within the visual. I will be working on this further, trying different techniques and compositions.

This morning i have been experimenting with different ways of welcoming viewers to my new upcoming online showcase. The image below could be placed on the contact page, and a more neatly formed composition could mark the beginning of the website.

Below is my current logo which will be placed into the navigation section on my new website. I am pleased with the formation of the clean letter forms through the use of the diagonal lines.

A few days ago i came across a really fun website, for those who are seduced by the letter form of the ampersand i suggest you bookmark The Ampersand. The project concept is by Stephen Gose.

I submitted the above image, using their own logo as a template and is now present on their website.

Movement becomes static...

The concept of movement being captured and translated as a static image is quite mind provoking and very surreal.

Although my nephew (art director of the day!) was jumping i still managed to keep the camera in focus. I am thrilled with the outcome - it is so much sharper than i anticipated.
